Spiritual direction is a key discipline for Christian leaders because the dynamics of the ministry world are complicated and, at times, lonely. The importance of having a “soul companion” to process the inner life becomes even more important. William Barry and William Connolly define spiritual direction as “help given by one Christian to another which enables that person to pay attention to God’s personal communication to him or her, to respond to this personally communicating God, to grow in intimacy with this God, and to live out the consequences of the relationship.”
The spiritual director asks not just “what is happening?” but “what is moving forward?” It is a space to share challenges and losses, while also celebrating joys and accomplishments, all with the hope of exploring and deepening your awareness of God.
